5 REASONS WHY YOUR NATURAL HAIR IS NOT GROWING.

You had your big chop and were very excited to grow long natural hair, but it grew to certain certain stage and now you feel it isn't growing anymore. The truth is, unless you have a medical issue that prevents your follicles from producing new hair, your strands are always growing, so you might ask yourself, why am I not seeing results?

The main reason could be you are not retaining length, the hair is growing yes,but the ends are breaking off at the same rate. Here are reasons why you are not retaining enough length and hence, the hair seems not to be growing.

  • You are always disturbing it.
Over manipulating your hair, either with your hands, brushes, combs and so on causes unnecessary stress to your hair, hence leading to the ends breaking. If you can't stay without touching your hair, why not use protective styles, that way less touch, less breakage and more length retention.

  • Lack of moisture.
Natural hair is prone to dryness and keeping it moisturized helps a lot in its health. The make of our hair doesn't allow the natural oils from the scalp to easily spread to the ends, hence you need to have an alternative way to get the moisture to your hair. If not, you are in the risk of breakage. I would recommend you always use the loc method (liquid, oil, cream)   after your wash day. This will boost hair elasticity and help prevent breakage.

  • Too much heat.
Too much heat too often, and if done unsafely, causes your hair to be extra dry and brittle. To make sure your hair is safe during heat application, apply a layer of heat protection spray or lotion, this will give your hair that beautiful finish without the damage. Also use the adjustable settings as it should. Choose the cool to medium heat setting as much as possible.

  • Not trimming.
You may think that trim i your hair seems like a backward process, but giving your hair a trim is the best thing you could do to it. Trims get rid of nasty split ends and damage that lead to breakage. There is no rule as to how often you should get that trim, but doing so at least once every 3 months, will refresh your ends and keep them healthy.

  • Genetics.
Our hair strands grow in cycles. Each strand individually goes through the Anagen phase, which is the growing period of hair follicles, it is followed by a phase called Catagen, characterized by slower growth and finally the Telogen phase, which is the resting and shedding period. Each person's growth phase differs and is determined mostly by genetics. It lasts between 2yrs and 6yrs,advises Dr. James  C. Marotta, plastic surgeon and hair restoration specialist.
